Having a Ball…Cheese Style

Family Favorite Cheese BallSome of the best recipes are ones that have been around forever. You know the kind…recipes that have been in your family for eons. The ones you’re not quite sure of the origination, but you’ve always eaten them. This cheese ball is one of those. I know it is at least a 40 year old recipe. Maybe even older. It’s one of those recipes I remember from my youth that was only prepared for holidays. Probably because that’s when my parents did the most entertaining I was involved in. Once I was married and having my own little family, it became one of our holiday traditions. Not anymore though. We make it year round because it just happens to be a favorite…of all who live here. It is so easy to prepare it’s really quite ridiculous. Unless your name is Glenn! Let me explain…many, many years ago he had a little trouble preparing this. It was in the first three months of our marriage, I was working in retail [my work day ended after Glenn’s], and we were having the first party at our apartment. Lots to do. Glenn wanted to “help” prepare the food. I left the recipe on the counter for him to make this cheese ball. So he went at it. Fast forward to my arrival home from work, I ask if he made it, was it in the refrigerator, etc. He replied yes it was done, in the frig, but he had some problems. It seems he burned up the motors on the stand-mixer, hand-mixer and the blender! What?? How on earth did that happen? [Remember, we were just 3 months married, so all these appliances were new!] His only explanation was the “equipment” just wouldn’t mix up the cheese, but with perseverance he finally got it done. He was so proud of himself… Until…I opened the refrigerator, and saw on the shelf…the jar of cheese spread. Wait…how could that be? Well, it seems my dear husband used the wrong cheese. He used a 1/2 pound block of cheddar cheese instead of the jar of cheese spread!! Yep, he had put that “rock solid cheese” in the mixers and blender. Hence the motors dying! Ugh! Well no wonder why he had so many problems. Even after all that though, he got it done. What a guy 🙂 And do you know what, it was the BEST damn cheese ball we ever had, never to be duplicated again! Go ahead and give Glenn’s version a try if you like, but I’d stick to the original 😀

2 8 ounce cream cheese, softened

1 stick butter, softened

1 jar Kraft™ Old English Cheese Spread, room temperature

2 Tablespoons dried parsley

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1 cup walnuts, finely chopped

Mix all ingredients together using an electric mixer until smooth and well blended. Chill 3-4 hours. Divide into thirds and roll into balls. Roll in chopped walnuts.
